Who Why What Where The System The Test The Penalty There's only one real reason - to train for and take the IAM Advanced Driving Test. Perhaps the main motivation for taking the test is the sense of pride and achievement in having demonstrated that you are capable of driving to a far higher standard than that of the basic L-test. There are, however, some more tangible benefits!

The most important of these is that the statistics clearly show that those who have passed the test -- or even trained for it and failed -- are safer drivers. A Transport Research Laboratory report ('LR499') concluded that drivers who had taken the IAM test had an accident rate at least 50% lower than the national average, and those who passed the test were safer still. Even when an accident does occur, those involving advanced drivers are less severe. A report commissioned by General Accident ('The Accident Liabilities of Advanced Drivers') showed that accidents involving advanced drivers result in fewer write-offs.

More selfishly, a growing number of insurance companies are offering special terms to IAM members. These terms may include both discounted premiums and additional services
